LGBTQ+ Affirming Healthcare Series, Session One: 2024-25 Program Kick-Off

Description:
The presentation will introduce audience members and participants to what microaggressions are (both in general and in healthcare contexts), discuss microaggressions specific to LGBTQ+ patients, deepen and illuminate that discussion by introducing several relevant case studies, and analyze those case studies with a particular eye toward the harms experienced by patients. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of why healthcare professionals should work to diminish the occurrences of microaggressions in their practices and institutions.

Learning Objectives:
· Identify what microaggressions are and why they are harmful
· Discuss microaggressions common to LGBTQ+ patients
· Understand the particular harms of microaggressions to LGBTQ+ patients
· Determine how healthcare professionals can reduce microaggressions in their practices and institutions 

Brief Biosketch:
Lauren Freeman, PhD, (she/her), is a Professor of Philosophy at University of Louisville and Director of the M.A. in Applied Philosophy. She’s also an affiliated faculty member in the Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. She conducts impact driven, interdisciplinary research that aims to understand how members of marginalized groups are oppressed in both obvious and subtle ways within the context of science, medicine, health, and healthcare.

Hybrid details will be emailed to registered participants on the evening of September 11.

  • Participants are welcome to attend individual sessions, even if they don’t plan on earning a Certificate of Completion for the series.

  • Sessions are open to all who are interested in improving affirming care practices.

  • Complimentary lunch provided to in-person participants, first-come, first-served (arrive early!).

  • Online registration will CLOSE on Sept. 10th.
